Arizona Cardinals played Jonathan Gannon football in Week 1 of the preseason: tough, hard, prepared. However, it wasn’t all positive. There were a few players that didn’t have their best performance this past weekend in the 16-14 loss to the New Orleans Saints. First, Desmond Ridder didn’t have his best stuff playing while playing the entire first half. Although playing against more starters than Clayton Tune did during his play in the second half, Ridder struggled. Throwing just 4-9 for 42 yards while adding 39 yards on the ground on 5 carries, he didn’t look comfortable in his first action in Drew Petzing’s offense. Next, Elijah Wilkinson struggled. A talking point when he played left guard last year as part of a duo with he and DJ Humphries was definitely a weak spot for the 2023 Arizona Cardinals. That trend carried over to the Cardinals first action of 2024. He got beat regularly off the line giving Ridder not much time to make anything happen. Rookie Isaiah Adams didn’t show incredible lasting power either from the left guard position in his first action as an NFL player. Also, Trey Benson, while getting the bulk of the work early on, only managed 21 yards on 8 carries. A very small sample size, sure, and playing against a tougher defense than Michael Carter II did, sure, but it was just an ok performance by Benson.
