The Daily DLP takes a look at historical data surrounding all-in moves across the sports landscape and how they don’t always work. In fact, there are numerous relevant examples that Detroit fans can easily recall of “super teams” like the Los Angeles Rams are trying to assemble falling well short of their lofty expectations.
Using data from Sumer Sports, we tracked the preseason odds favorite to win the Super Bowl going back to 1995 and how they fared in the ensuing NFL season. The Rams vaulted to the top of the odds favorites to win the coming Super Bowl, but there’s ample history that shows how rare it is that the best team (on paper) entering the season winds up winning it all. In fact, there are nearly as many examples of those top teams missing the playoffs as there are winning the title.
Two historical Detroit teams wound up winning titles in their sports in years where so-called “all-in” super teams were expected to dominate. The 1996-97 Red Wings and the 2004-05 Pistons weren’t the best teams entering the preseason, or even the postseason. But they prevailed over allegedly superior squads.
These 2026 Lions are capable of doing the same. A look at the Rams depth chart reflects why Lions fans, as well as fans of other viable contenders, should still feel worthy of harboring championship aspirations even after the Rams acquired Myles Garrett. The Rams are very good, no doubt, and deserve to be the favorites. The favorites don’t always win in games or seasons, as the 2024 Lions know all too well.
