On today’s Locked On Texans, we’re talking about why Keylan Rutledge already looks like one of the Texans’ best offensive linemen, and why his versatility could make him so valuable to DeMeco Ryans and this Houston offense.
Is it a little scary that a rookie could already be the best OL on the roster? Yes.
But there’s something different about Rutledge.
Houston has seen young offensive linemen struggle to find consistency before. We’ve seen the Tytus Howard progression. We’ve seen the Texans search for answers up front throughout the Nick Caserio era and into the DeMeco Ryans era.
But we haven’t really seen a Keylan Rutledge.
Big Red brings versatility, physicality and the type of interior presence Houston has been missing. The question now becomes just how high his ceiling can go.
Could his floor look something like the good Shaq Mason years in New England?
Could his ceiling eventually resemble Landon Dickerson?
And what about Aireontae Ersery?
Is Ersery’s progression discouraging? Maybe. But there’s an important distinction between what we’ve seen from Ersery and what we’re seeing from Rutledge — and that difference could tell us a lot about Houston’s offensive line moving forward.
